چکیده

Information on the polarization properties of scattered light from plasmonic systems are of paramount importance due to fundamental interest and potential applications. However, such studies are severely compromised due to the experimental difficulties in recording full polarization response of plasmonic nanostructures. Here, we report on a novel Mueller matrix spectroscopic system capable of acquiring complete polarization information from single isolated plasmonic nanoparticle/nanostructure. The outstanding issues pertaining to reliable measurements of full 4 × 4 spectroscopic scattering Mueller matrices from single nanoparticle/nanostructures are overcome by integrating an efficient Mueller matrix measurement scheme and a robust eigenvalue calibration method with a dark-field microscopic spectroscopy arrangement. Feasibility of quantitative Mueller matrix polarimetry and its potential utility is illustrated on a simple plasmonic system, that of gold nanorods. The demonstrated ability to record full polarization information over a broad wavelength range and to quantify the intrinsic plasmon polarimetry characteristics via Mueller matrix inverse analysis should lead to a novel route towards quantitative understanding, analysis/interpretation of a number of intricate plasmonic effects and may also prove useful towards development of polarization-controlled novel sensing schemes.

Monitoring Early-Stage Nanoparticle Assembly in Microdroplets by Optical Spectroscopy and SERS.

Microfluidic microdroplets have increasingly found application in biomolecular sensing as well as nanomaterials growth. More recently the synthesis of plasmonic nanostructures in microdroplets has led to surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based sensing applications. However, the study of nanoassembly in microdroplets has previously been hindered by the lack of on-chip characterization t...

Dark field nanoparticle tracking analysis for size characterization of plasmonic and non-plasmonic particles

Dark field microscopy is a widely unknown method to measure the particle size distribution of diffusing nanoparticles by particle tracking. Here we demonstrate that by using the surface plasmonic resonance of Au nanoparticles, size differences of ca. 20 nm can be identified within the particle size distribution. For that purpose, we developed a software tool which helps to analyze color videos ...

Towards Measurement of Polarization Properties of Skin using the Ellipsometry Technique

Introduction: The human skin is an active medium from the optical point of view. Therefore, the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques employing light are increasing. Current optical techniques are based on the measurement of the intensity of reflected absorbed or backscattered light from or within skin. Studies have shown that biological tissues, and in particular skin, demonstrate polarization...

Dark modes and Fano resonances in plasmonic clusters excited by cylindrical vector beams.

Control of the polarization distribution of light allows tailoring the electromagnetic response of plasmonic particles. By rigorously extending the generalized multiparticle Mie theory, we show that focused cylindrical vector beams (CVB) can be used to efficiently excite dark plasmon modes in nanoparticle clusters. In addition to the small radiative damping and large field enhancement associate...

Annals of Biomedical Research and Education

The Mueller matrix polarimetry is a useful technique for characterization and imaging of biological materials and turbid medium. The recoded transmitted Mueller matrix elements are highly intensity and wavelength dependent. We derived the sixteen Mueller matrix images out of forty-nine polarization configurations for characterization of the polystyrene sphere of 0.2 to 20 μm illuminated with po...
